Plan your visit
Good to know before you arrive
Sutherland is a small Karoo town, so a little planning will help you make the most of your stay. Everyday groceries, fuel and other essentials are available in town, but it is worth bringing anything special you may need with you.
Days can be warm and sunny while evenings can become surprisingly cold. Bring warm clothing for stargazing and evenings outside, whatever time of year you visit.
Groceries & supplies
Everyday groceries and basic supplies are available in Sutherland. For a self-catering stay, it's a good idea to do your main shop before arriving if you want a wider choice or anything particular.
Fuel & cash
Fuel is available in Sutherland, but filling-station hours can be limited, particularly on Sundays. It is a good idea to fill up when you have the opportunity, especially before travelling further into the Karoo.
ATMs for ABSA, Capitec and Standard Bank are available in town. Carrying a little cash can also be useful for smaller local purchases.
Weather & what to bring
Sutherland's weather can be surprisingly changeable. Summer days can be hot, while winter nights can fall well below freezing. Even after a warm day, temperatures can drop quickly after sunset.
Bring layers, a warm jacket and comfortable shoes. If you're planning an evening of stargazing, gloves and a warm hat are well worth packing in the colder months.
Getting here
Part of the pleasure of Sutherland is the journey. From Cape Town, take the N1 to Matjiesfontein and then turn onto the R354 for the final stretch across the Karoo to Sutherland. The road from Matjiesfontein is tarred.
Take your time, keep an eye on your fuel and enjoy the changing landscape. Once you arrive in Sutherland, Tula Karoo is at 10 Plein Street, right in town.
