Stars, history and wide-open Karoo
Sutherland is best known for its extraordinary night skies, but there is much more to discover. Explore the great telescopes, learn about the town's history or head out into the surrounding Karoo.
We've selected a few experiences worth considering during your stay at Tula Karoo. For opening times, prices and bookings, please follow the links provided as these can change.

The Dutch Reformed Church
One of Sutherland's most distinctive landmarks, the historic stone church is well worth visiting. Inside, look for graffiti left by British troops during the Anglo-Boer War and the church's remarkable German organ.
Louw Huis and Museum
The Louwhuis and Museum is the birthplace of celebrated Afrikaans poets N.P. van Wyk Louw and W.E.G. Louw and reflects an important part of Sutherland's literary heritage.

The Southern African Large Telescope (SALT)
High above Sutherland, SALT is the largest optical telescope in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the town's great attractions. Visitors can tour the observatory site and learn about the remarkable science taking place beneath Sutherland's clear skies.
Sutherland Cemetery
This historic cemetery contains graves dating from the Anglo-Boer War and offers a quiet glimpse into Sutherland's past. British soldiers and local residents are among those buried here.

Sterland Stargazing
Experience Sutherland's remarkable night sky through a telescope. Jurg Wagener's Sterland Stargazing sessions combine an introduction to the night sky with outdoor viewing through telescopes. Remember to dress warmly — Sutherland nights can be very cold.
Sutherland Planetarium
In the centre of Sutherland, this small digital planetarium offers an entertaining introduction to astronomy through immersive full-dome shows. It also has an Astro Amphitheatre for evening stargazing.

Horse Riding
Explore the Karoo on horseback at Blesfontein Guest Farm, around 28 km from Sutherland. Children can enjoy pony rides, while adults can experience the farm and its wildlife on horseback. Rides should be booked in advance.
Hiking Trails
Explore the Karoo on the walking trails at Middelfontein Farm, just outside Sutherland. Trails range from shorter, easy walks to longer routes, with numbered Karoo plants identified along the way. Mountain biking is also available.
